Kids choose a ‘weather’ corner of the room then ask the teacher, “How’s the weather today?” The teacher shuffles the other weather cards and answers, “It’s sunny/rainy etc”. Winners get a point- repeat. SPECIAL- To prevent the ‘sheep’ mentality, use chairs and limit the amount of people able to choose the same location. ie. 12 kids, put 3 chairs under each weather card. Kids can receive a chip for winning. Ask them, “What color do you want?
WEATHER BOARD GAME – Pink Book Split kids into groups, 1 book per 4-5 kids) Kids place their bets on the book’s page using chips. The teacher then visits each group, the kids say, “How’s the weather today? The teacher rolls the dice (It’s sunny) and pays out to the winners. (This is HOMEWORK)

GAME: SIT DOWN , TURN AROUND -ONI – (Trigger WORDS): The kids ask the teacher repeatedly (chant/rhythm style), ‘How are you?’, The teacher says, I’m…..’. If certain words are said, namely, ‘happy, cold & scared’, the kids do a particular action. If the teacher says, ‘ANGRY’ then the kids run away and an ONI game starts. Eventually get kids to be the ONI.
GAME: STEPPING STONES: Lay the A4 Feelings cards out on the floor like ’stepping-stones’ crossing a river. S1 tries to ‘cross the river’ by saying the word as they stand on the card. If they don’t know the word, teach it to them and make them swim back to the ‘shore’. S2 then tries. Hopefully they’ll collectively learn from their mistakes and get across the river.
Materials: Large A4 sized FEELINGS crads, 2 sets or 1 set and the pad.
GAME: HORSESHOE JANKEN: Place the A4 Feelings vocab cards on the ground in a giant horseshoe shape. Make 2 teams which start from opposite ends of the horseshoe. A player from each team walks onto the horseshoe saying the words of the cards as they go. When they met, they JANKEN (Rock, paper, scissors) The loser is out and the next member of the loser’s team has to begin their journey to prevent the winner from reaching the end and receiving a point.
GAME: CHARADES – 1 kid is chosen from the crowd and is shown a ‘feelings’ card. The Group asks, “How are you?” ,The kid acts it out and the audiences guesses. You’ll have to practice all the gestures first.
GAME: Memory – SMALL FEELINGS CARDS (2 sets) – 2 sets of cards , shuffled and placed on the table. Take turns revealing 2 cards (3 cards OK too in the beginning or for little kids) and try to match the pairs.
GAME: Feelings Dominoes– SMALL FEELINGS DOMINO CARDS– Simple Version, deal-out all the cards, take turns adding cards to the first by matching the ends, to make a chain. Eg. 1st Card, (He is hot/She is cold), S2 can add their, (He is cold/She is hungry) card by placing the 2 ‘colds’ end to end. S3 can now add onto the ‘hot’ or the ‘hungry’ end. DOUBLE CARDS, eg. (sleepy/sleepy) act as a T-Junction and should be placed perpendicular to the other cards. If you can’t play a card say, PASS. 1st to finish is the winner.
Proper version- This is a 2 player game, with only 7 cards each. It often ends in a ‘stalemate’ in which the person with the least cards is the ‘kind-of-winner’. 1 set of Domino Cards (28 cards) can allow 2 games to operate simultaneously. Students should have a ‘Round-Robin’ competition each playing each other an equal amount of times. Scores are given for, TOTAL WIN (all cards gone)=4 points, KIND-OF-WIN (Stalemate but has the least cards)=3 points, KIND-OF-LOSS (Stalemate but has the most cards) =2 points and TOTAL LOSS (other player got rid of all their cards)=1 point. A stalemate draw =2 points. Students should ‘janken’ to start, this often determines the winner of the game.
GAME: Here you are! Memory- SMALL ‘FEELINGS & CURE’ CARDS– Start with ½ set. (12 feelings & 12 Cures). Spread the ‘cure’ cards face down on the table, put the feelings cards face down in a pile. S1 says to S2, “How are you?, S2 picks up a feeling card from the pile and says, “I’m ..sleepy..”. S1 attempts to chose the correct ‘cure’ card (ie. the pillow), If incorrect (likely on 1st attempt) he gives it (ie. the apple) to S2, says,
The ‘PRONOUNS’ were added to the kindy book to help connect it more to the Junior Series textbooks. We don’t really expect the kindy kids to undersatnd it well. Try to focus on the ‘I’ and ‘You’ as mentioned in the previous unit ‘How are YOU?, I am… ?‘ and the next unit, ‘What do YOU like?’, ‘I like …‘
GAME: The Bomb Game – LARGE A4 Pronoun Cards– L & R the vocab, show the BATSU (X) cards. Mix them up and spread them on the floor. In turns, kids go up and retrieve a card hoping not to get the BATSU card. If found, set up again and repeat..
GAME: Run & Name Challenge – (Scrap paper) Tickets – Spread the kids out in a line or circle in the room. One by one, the kids take turns trying to name everyone in the class, as they pass them. S1 starts at one end and has to name all the kids as the pass, ‘He is ..Kenji., She is ..Yumi.., She is .Sara…’, finally they say, ‘I am …..’ and (if possible), ‘You are …TEACHER’s NAME….’ Perhaps S1 should collect something from each student (a ticket) as they name each student and then present them to the teacher at the end when they say the teachers name. Also, in the beginning you may want to have all the students make the sentences as S1 runs along and collects the tickets.
SONG: Do you like broccoli? Yes I do./No I don’t. -SupSimpEng.
Game : Lucky Dip – Similar to the Karuta game except that the cards are spread out, FACE DOWN on the table. A ‘Category-Prompt’ is left face up. eg. ‘FRUIT’ and is rotated each turn. The kids chant/ask, ‘What fruit do you like?’, S1 takes a card from the pile and says, ‘I like …’. If it’s a fruit they get to keep it as a point. If not, put it back and mix it in. Rotate the PROMPT eg. ‘What color do you like?, for S2.
Use the ‘Do you like brocoli?’ song to practice the ‘Yes, I do’, ‘No, I don’t.’ part.
GAME: 50/50 ‘Do you have this? the same as the ‘LIKE/DON’T LIKE’ lesson in PINK BOOK.
GAME: THE BANANA GAME – (Trigger Word) – Kids line up at one end of the room. Teacher in the middle. Kids shout, “What do you like…?”, Teacher says, “I like …”. If the teachers says the magic word, “Banana”, then the kids have to run to the other side without being caught. Later kids can be ‘oni’s’.

You’ll (the teacher) have to remember where each card is yourself, so that you know where they are. Draw a map or stick the cards in alternating order around the room as per the song, eg. HEAD EYES SHOULDERS EARS KNEES MOUTH TOES NOSE, so that you can find them to reveal the answer. Now, Sing the song with the students and then stop on a word, ‘nose’. The students have to guess where ‘nose’ is by choosing a card and running to it. Then reveal the answer after adding a bit of suspense. The kids who chose correctly, win a point. The card is then left face up and the game repeated. The odds get easier each time as more cards are left face up so each student will win at least 1 point.

Write the numbers 1- 6 down the board with an animal next to each number eg. 1= elephant, 2 = monkey. S1 from Team 1 rolls the dice, eg. ‘2’. Everyone chants, “Where is the monkey?” S1 guesses and says , ‘on the house’. The card that’s ‘on the house’ is revealed. If correct that team receives a point, the card is removed and the ‘2’ is erased from the black board. If incorrect eg. ‘sorry, its an elephant’, the card is put back. Now it’s Team 2’s turn. They will be hoping to roll a ‘1’ as they now know where the elephant is. If they roll a ‘2’ its bad luck as the monkey has already been found. Now, on the board or just using the book, explain that 1 = father, 2 = mother etc. S1 rolls the dice, eg. ‘1’ and we all say, “Where is father?” S1 guesses and says, “In the kitchen.” We check who is in the kitchen and show it to everyone. If correct, ‘Yeh!’ – Congratulations! ‘Father’ is now out of the game and if anyone rolls a ‘1’ again, its ‘Boo Boo Bad luck’. If it’s incorrect, then put them back under the card. GAME: JiJi Nuki – A5 sized SPLIT- Transport cards. Check how many students you have and adjust the cards accordingly. Spread those cards out face down at the end of the room. Students run to end of the room, choose a card, find the student who has the matching half of the card and run back to the teacher as a pair, saying the vocabulary, eg. ‘ bicycle ‘. With an ODD number of students, one kid won’t have a partner, ‘Boo Boo, you lose.’ With an even number of students, make sure there are 2 x ‘un-pairable’ halves, and there will be two losers. Eventually play a ‘CHAMPION GAME ‘ where those who can’t find a partner are out. Reduce the amount of cards and repeat until there are 2 winners.
HIGH LEVEL CRAZY NEW GAME – UNTESTED GAME: Criss-Cross-Chain Reaction – You’ll need to arrange the cards such that this will work out. Create 2 Teams, A and B and have them line up on opposite walls. Give each student two ‘half of a vehicle’ cards, EXCEPT FOR STUDENT 1 FROM TEAM A. They will only have 1! S1 from Team A (Let’s call them TA1) runs over to Team B and finds a student who has the other half, of their vehicle. That student, from Team B (Let’s call him, ‘TB1’), gives TA1 the half to complete the vehicle. T1A is now safely out of the game and can sit down somewhere. TB1 then runs over to Team A and and finds a student who has the other half of their card. TB1 is now safely ‘OUT’, having given one card away and having received one card to complete their vehicle. They can sit out of the game. Now TA2 runs over to Team B to find the other half of their vehicle. Etc, etc. The last people are the winners or losers depending on how you want to play it. Odd and Even number of students may affect how this is played. OPTION: You may want to have the original first player, TA1, have two cards at the beginning. After receiving a card to pair their vehicle, they would stay on Team B’s side of the room as they are yet to give a card away.

BLUE BOOK – GAME: PERSONAL BINGO – (MINI CARDS of Halloween Things, Ghost, skeleton etc.) – No cards yet! Photocopy the page and cut out the sqaures to make mini-cards. This is BINGO but as everyone has the exact same BINGO SHEET in their book, it is played slightly differently. Instead of calling out a card eg. “Santa’s sleigh” and having everyone circle it, each student is given a different card. Make rounds of the classroom handing each student a card. Let them keep the card until you visit them again. Collect the card and give them a new one. Keep shuffling the cards that you have in hand, so there is a random outcome. When a student gets BINGO, give them a Candy. Keep playing until everyone gets a candy. If time, play again. Have the students swap pens to a different color. Instead of drawing a circle, have them draw an ‘X’ to keep track.
PINK BOOK – GAME: ‘What’s the time Mr. Wolf?’ Styled ‘Trigger Word’ – Special HALLOWEEN MONSTER cards exist with 3 pictures of MONSTERS on each card, eg. witch, goblin, warewolf etc. Each student has a CARD with MONSTERS on it. This continues until the teacher says, “Everyone” and chases them all back to the start. Later, recruit some kids to join you as oni’s. Let the ‘Oni’ children have turns saying what the ‘MONSTER’ is.
