VERBS ! - There's a lot to unpack here!

As you know, each successive textbook includes important material taught in the previous year’s textbook. This allows EXPERIENCED students to review the material and NEW students to catch up during the CORE BASICS crash course. There are only 2 weeks allotted to VERBS during the CORE BASICS crash course. There are too many activities and too much content to be covered in this time, especially in Red Book 5 & Black Book 6. Use the time well. Teachers will have to choose appropriate (challenging) lessons for their classes based on level and experience. Teachers should encourage students to study the other pages in their own time. 

The VERBS section can be made harder by 1) Adding more VERBS, 2) Changing the TENSE, 3) Changing the grammar, do, does, will, going to, did etc.

DON’T WASTE THE 2 WEEKS PLAYING ‘-ing VERBO’ WITH HIGH LEVEL EXPERIENCED STUDENTS.

Overview of themes covered.

NOTE: RED BOOK 5 and BLACK BOOK 6 have many more topics and may do things in a different order to GREEN BOOK 3 and BLUE BOOK 4.

1) VERB + ING

Learn / review VERB SET 1 & 2 with ‘-ing’. “He is running”, “They are dancing.” etc.

2) S-Rule

Learn / review the ‘S-Rule’ – In the Simple Present Tense we need to add an ‘S’ to the verb for ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘it’. eg. ‘I drink coffee.’ > ‘He drinkS coffee.’

3)will vs. going to ..

Know the difference! ‘will’ is when we are thinking at the time of speaking. ‘going to’ is used when we have decided to do it.

4) PAST

Simple Past – learn the regular and irregular verbs in the past tense. do-did-, go- went- etc.

2) The 'S' Rule.

In the SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE we have to an ‘S’ to the VERB if the PRONOUN is ‘He’, ‘She’ or ‘It’. Eg. ‘I drink coffee’ becomes ‘She drinkS coffee.’ ‘Do you ….?’ becomes ‘Does he/she/it?’
1) Can they identify when the ‘S’ is needed? ie. When there is a ‘He’, ‘She’ or ‘It.’- Play the S-Rule Game
2) Can they flip between needing  and ‘S’ and not needing an ‘S’.

3) will vs. going to (Red and Black Book)

When we get an idea to do something we use ‘will’. If we have decided to do something we use the ‘be’ verb + ‘going to’. ‘Will’ was introduced in Green Book 3, Unit 4. ‘Going to’ was introduced in Blue Book 4, Unit 5. Play the respective, ‘#PSS-14# -Lucky-Dip – Escalating (’cause-effect’ pair) games from those Units.
